Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 it is illegal to drop litter or dump any waste or rubbish on private or public land. Those caught dropping litter which includes chewing gum, apple cores and cigarette butts, may receive a fixed penalty notice of £75 or face a maximum fine of up to £2500.
So to avoid a £75 fixed penalty notice…please Bin your Litter.
The Council is involved with various anti-litter campaigns to encourage people to dispose of their rubbish correctly. Many offer you the chance to get involved and help to clean up your local area.
We have local campaigns tackling car litter, smoking litter and fast food litter and as members of both the Cleaner Essex Partnership and the Keep Britain Tidy Network we also join in a variety of National Campaigns that all target making our Town and our Country a cleaner and greener place to be.
There is no need to drop your cigarette butt as our free pocket ashtrays allow you to dispose of your cigarette quickly, safely and correctly if there is no bin nearby. They can hold up to five cigarette butts and you can collect a free pocket ashtray from the reception area of the Council Offices in New Road. (while stocks last)
Thurrock is also the only Council in Britain to have branded mini pop-up car bins, which are sold at the all of Thurrock's Libraries. Thanks to a double waterproof liner, fruit peel, juice cartons and coffee cups present no problem to the car bin. It hangs from a head rest or can be secured over the gear stick, and it can be folded flat when not needed. The bins are on sale for only £3.00.
