Community Grants - Suggested Sources

If you have a project in mind and are looking for funding the following information is intended as a brief summary to funding opportunities in Thurrock. In all cases, the specific criteria and application process for each fund should be considered before making applications.

If you live in these areas you are in one of our Community First locations. Each of these areas has funding available for community benefit projects up to the value of £2,500.00.

Examples could be:

* improve the environment of a local park or green space

* increase the range of activities available at night for young people

* increase support for older people living alone

* address graffiti /vandalism in the ward

* improve the health of inhabitants of the ward

* bring different communities within the ward closer together

Background:

Essex Community Foundation awards grants to voluntary or community groups, which are charitable in purpose and are working for the benefit of people in Thurrock. We support a wide range of projects and welcome applications from both new and established groups. maximum grant £10,000 average grant £3,500.

Thurrock Community Chest (The Mayor's Charity)

Groups can raise funds through selling Community Chest raffle tickets– purchase price 50p and sell at £1.

Funding can also be obtained through a small grants application process (n.b. applicants are encouraged to sell draw tickets).

Draw tickets are available from November – July each year.

Applications are looked at regularly throughout the year (usually on a monthly basis), but there are no set panel dates.

GRANTfinder A website where you can input your own criteria for your project and it will search approximately 4,000 Funders to find ones that are suitable.  
The Veolia Mardyke Trust Grants are available to areas across South Ockendon, North Stifford, Stifford Clays, Grays and Blackshots area (north of Long Lane) Aveley and Purfleet (west of the railway) to support improvements in the physical and social environment. The general public must be able to benefit from projects. Contact Andy Furze for an application form and to discuss potential applications. The panel meets quarterly.
Voluntary Sector Grants Panel

The panel allocates funding via small grants and SLA’s to further voluntary sector activity in support of Councils priorities. Organisations must work across the whole borough and be constituted. Currently closed for applications.
Awards for All Not for profit groups with a governing document and bank/building society account. Some statutory bodies, but not for statutory responsibilities. You can apply any time for a small grant of up to £10,000.
BIG Lottery To bring real improvement to communities and the lives of people most in need. Must have a SMART outcome. Contact BIG for more details.
Heritage Lottery Fund A range of grant programmes designed for heritage projects of different types and sizes, from museums, parks and historic places to archaeology, natural environment and cultural traditions, we invest in every part of our diverse heritage. Grants for the Arts

Grants for the arts are for activities carried out over a set period and which engage people in England in arts activities, and help artists and arts organisations in England carry out their work.

Grants for the arts is funded by the National Lottery.

 
The Rotary Club of Grays Thurrock

If you would like to be considered for a grant please write to The President at the following address:

The Rotary Club of Grays Thurrock have small amounts of funding available to support individuals or community groups living or working in Thurrock. The Rotary Club aim to be flexible and will take all applications on their merit. They generally make donations of between a few hundred pounds up to £1,000.

In order to apply for a grant you must either live or work in Thurrock and your project must be of a charitable nature that makes a difference to either the Thurrock community or an individual living in Thurrock. The club do not fund for anything that would generally be provided by the state.

To help you decide whether or not to apply here are some very diverse examples of previous grants: a young resident sent to the USA for an operation that is unavailable on the NHS; a contribution towards equipment for a disabled riding school; safety equipment for a scout group; a special day out for a group of disabled children.

 
Thurrock Community Safety Partnership

A project from either, partner agencies, or community and voluntary groups, that contributes to any of the five key priorities for the lifetime of the next three year strategy (2011/2014). The five key priorities are to:

  • Reduce Anti-Social Behaviour,
  • Improve Community Safety through Education,
  • Engagement and Prevention,
  • Reduce Re-Offending,
  • Reduce Serious Crime, and
  • Domestic Abuse, and Tackle Hate Crime (race, religion, disability, and sexual orientation).
Meetings are held every six weeks. Funding available for capital and revenue projects. No maximum but preferably under £20k.
