Thurrock Council has tried to make this web site as accessible as possible for visitors with a visual impairment. In addition, we are pleased to offer advice to visitors on how to get the most out of their web browsers.

Not everyone finds it easy to read small text and certain text/background colour combinations. If you wish to make the Thurrock Council web site easier to read all you need to do is make a couple of simple changes in your browser settings.

Note: In the instructions below, the term 'click' is used where a browser option must be selected or activated (e.g. by using a pointing device such as a computer mouse, or an equivalent assistive technology.

Mozilla

The following instructions apply to version 1 of Mozilla on Microsoft Windows.

Change Text Size

To change the size of the text for this browsing session:

  • Select the View menu from the browser toolbar.
  • Use the Text Zoom function.

To change the default text size for all websites:

  • On the Edit menu select Preferences.
  • Under Appearance, select Fonts.
  • Change the Size (pixels) value to reflect the size at which you want fonts to appear.
  • Set a Minimum font size to ensure that fonts are not displayed too small.
  • Click OK to confirm your changes.

Change Text Color

You may also find it helpful to change the colour scheme, for example, to a yellow/black combination.

  • On the Edit menu select Preferences.
  • Under Appearance, select Colors.
  • Tick the Use my chosen colors... box to ensure that your selection overides web site settings.
  • In the Text and Background section:
    • Click the rectangle to the right of Text and choose a text colour (e.g. yellow).
    • Click the rectangle to the right of Background and choose a background colour (e.g. black).
  • Click OK to confirm your changes.

Instructions are available for a wide range of browsers. Please select your browser from the lists below to see how you can adjust your settings. The browsers have been separated according to the computer operating system(s) on which they are available. If you are unsure which browser you are currently using, you can easily find out by clicking your browser's Help menu. The menu will list something like "About Internet Explorer" or "About Firefox". The About item will also give you other information about your browser such as which version you currently are running.
