How do I join the library?

Simply visit your local branch library. Alternatively, you can join online at www.thurrock.gov.uk/libraries, in which case your ticket will be sent to you in the post.

What's the youngest age that children can join?

Your child can join from birth!

What kind of things will I find in the library?

Books, newspapers, magazines, CDs, DVDs, books on CD, free internet access, photocopiers.

How many items can I borrow on my ticket?

You can take up to 14 items out on your ticket at any one time. This includes books, CDs, DVDs and Spoken Word. Visit our Borrower Privileges page for more information.

Is there any charge for borrowing things?

There is no charge for borrowing books but there are charges for DVDs, etc. These vary and so you would need to ask a member of staff or look at the latest details in our Library Info 'Charges' page.

How long can I borrow books for?

For three weeks, and they can be renewed up to seven times. The borrowing period for other items varies and you would need to ask a member of staff or check the web page.

Can I renew or reserve my books online?

Yes, it is possible to renew and reserve book online using the ELAN (Essex Libraries Automated Network) catalogue. Visit our ELAN page for more information.

If you haven't got what I want can you get it from elsewhere?

Yes, in many cases, and reservations are free.

Do I have to take the items back to the library I borrowed them from?

No, you can take any item back to any library in Thurrock, Essex or Southend.

What if I can't get into a library? How can I get hold of books, etc.?

If you live too far away from a library, there is a mobile library that travels throughout the borough on a fortnightly schedule. It carries all types of stock in limited quantities but you can place reservations and the item will be on the mobile for you when it is available. Also, if you are housebound, there is a special service that delivers items to your home. Details of both services can be obtained either from a branch library or this website.

Can I use the Internet at the Library?

We have computers for access to the Internet at all our branches. You will need to telephone your local branch for an appointment and agree to our terms and conditions. Our 'Accessing Computers' pages will give you more information.
