Thurrock Council Ranger Service offers a broad spectrum of educational programmes based within the 400 acres of Langdon Hills Country Park.
All of the activities have been designed to cover specific parts of the national curriculum. The curriculum areas covered are outlined below the description of each activity. In addition to these highlighted areas, each activity covers broader aspects of the national curriculum and can be tailored to include or emphasise other specific parts.
Each activity is also in line with the Qualification and Certification Authority schemes of work learning outcomes. All of the activities we offer have been comprehensively risk assessed and we are able to send these risk assessments out to you on request.
In addition if you require a pre-visit site inspection we are happy to offer a tour of the park at a time convenient to you.
Our classroom is the great outdoors, with activities being very much "hands on". We can retire to mini-marquees that still give the feel of being a part of the countryside if the weather is very unfavourable.
Ranger guided school visits are charged at only £3.00 per child per day, adults are free. We will provide all the materials for your visit, but suitable clothing and footwear must be worn.
You help us make your visit run smoothly by providing first aid, discipline, and lunchtime supervision. We ask for the ratio of one adult to every five children as a necessity to comply with Thurrock Council child protection procedures.
We can tailor your programme to your needs. To discuss your visit to the park contact the Thurrock Ranger Service at Langdon Hills.

We very happily welcome younger groups of children to the park so they may enjoy the surroundings and the activities we have to offer. All of the programmes are adaptable and the pitch may be altered to suit early learning goals.
Besides our program of educational activities we are also able to offer Team Building and Adventure activities. Campfires, problem solving, team games, trust games, orienteering and our "Lost in the Jungle" survival scenario game.
As with our educational activities we are happy to adapt our teambuilding activities to suit you requirements. Our range of team building activities can be aimed at any age group and are even great for staff inset days!
The children explore the different animals that can be found in the local environment using the appropriate equipment provided. This traditional favourite is always popular and leads into further discussion into how animals grow and their life cycles.
The children use their skills of deduction to find a variety of trees around the park and then gather evidence that highlights the differences between different trees. The children are then encouraged to use creative English to express these differences.
Through looking at the plants, animals and soil this activity investigates how habitats and the organisms that live in them differ and why. This is achieved by carrying out scientific tests in two different habitats to see how the environment changes and identifying the plant species each can support.
The children explore the different animals that can be found in the local environment. Using the appropriate equipment provided they observe how they may vary in two different habitats (Meadow and Woodland). This leads on to further discussion into food chains and how they are adapted to live in their environments.

The children explore an area of meadow and woodland edge searching for certain plant types. They study the plants found and make diagrams of them. They identify the parts of their plants: leaf, stem etc. They also learn interesting facts about each plant.
The children follow a Ranger around a small trail and discover the park using their senses of sight, smell, hearing and touch, all of which are highlighted through games and activities. This helps the children become more aware of these senses and appreciate how different animals use their senses to survive everyday life.
This introduces children to their physical landscape and how to navigate between points on a map with the help of a compass. It incorporates basic map skills using all the appropriate equipment including compasses and orienteering maps.
