Each year the Council publishes an annual statement of Allowances and Expenses paid to each Councillor during the previous financial year.
This statement also includes the amount paid in allowances and expenses to members of the public who have been "co-opted" to sit on particular committees.
All Councillors receive a basic allowance and those who have been appointed to certain positions, such as Leader of the Council, Mayor and Chair or Vice-Chair of certain committees, receive a "Special Responsibility" allowance. This is in addition to their basic allowance.
All allowances paid to Councillors and "co-opted" members are paid in 12 monthly payments.
In addition, Councillors and "co-opted" members are also entitled to claim for travel and subsistence expenses, together with other expenses actually incurred in carrying out their duties as Councillors.
The payment of allowances and expenses are governed by legislation, regulation and Council's Constitution. There is no scope to make additional payments outside of the regulations.
In addition to directly paid expenses, the Council also provides councillors with equipment such as telephones and computers to assist them in carrying out their duties.
Year-by-year details of allowances and expenses paid can be found at:
