About Thurrock Youth Cabinet

Thurrock's Youth Cabinet, which was created in March 2006, is an established body of young people whose single aim is to better life for all young people in Thurrock. Every elected member of the Youth Cabinet plays a significant role in making sure the young people they represent are involved in the decision making processes.

Thurrock's Youth Cabinet is here to give the young people of Thurrock a voice.

The Youth Cabinet recognises that the people who best understand the issues faced by young people are young people themselves.

Youth Cabinet Teambuilding Day!

Members of the Thurrock Youth Cabinet visited Grangewaters Outdoor Education Centre on 24 August 2011 to take part in a day of teambuilding exercises. Challenges including high ropes and raft building were undertaken on the day as instructors from Grangewaters put the young people through their paces.

The aim of the day was getting the young people to work together on the challenges, learn new skills and to have fun in an organised activity in the school holidays.

Anne Marie Ola, who represents Chafford Hundred School on the Youth Cabinet, commented on the day:

"The team building day was an interesting and fun experience. We learnt a lot of new things about each other, like the strengths everyone has and how to combine those skills together to get things done. Also beating the boys was worthwhile too!!"

Pat Kielty, Participation Officer at Thurrock Council, added:

"The day was a good opportunity for new and existing Youth Cabinet members to work together on the team challenges. Its an exciting time at the moment as the Youth Cabinet is getting involved in a range of young people's issues such as health, crime prevention and youth activities in Thurrock."

The Thurrock Youth Cabinet is an elected body of young people (11-19 years) from Thurrock that aim to give a voice to young people from across the authority. Members are elected from a variety of schools and youth groups in Thurrock and are involved in working alongside Thurrock Council and other partners to ensure that young people are included in the shaping of services that best meets the needs of Thurrock young people.

Sponsored Triathlon

On 27th October, young people from Thurrock came together to take part in a sponsored triathlon event to raise funds for the East Africa appeal.

10 young people from the Thurrock Youth Cabinet and Tilbury Youth Centre completed the challenging course of biking, kayaking and climbing, all based at Grangewaters Outdoor Education Centre.

More than 13 million people in East Africa have been left in need of food, water and emergency healthcare because of one of the worst droughts in 60 years.

The fundraiser was the idea of Ejaay Manalastas who is a member of the Thurrock Youth Cabinet;

"I wanted to organise the event because I saw something so simple like water that young people my age from East Africa were desperate for. I knew I couldn't control the weather and make it rain there but I knew that I could do something that could bring water to them. It was a great event although the weather wasn't on our side, we made it. We accomplished two things on the day, raising money for the people in Africa also and coming together as a team".

Pat Kielty, Particatipation Officer at Thurrock Council added

"The young people taking part were a credit to Thurrock. They put in a great effort to complete the course and raised over £200 for this worthwhile cause. I'd like to thank the staff at Grangewaters Outdoor Education Centre who organised the event superbly".
