Sensory Impairment Support

Hearing and Visual Impairment Support

Our aim is to provide information and support to children and young people with a hearing or visual impairment, from pre-school onwards to enable them to overcome barriers to learning and help them to achieve their full potential.

Pre-school children often attend their local provision and some children continue into full time education at a local school. Post-16 pupils may choose to continue their education at a school, Sixth Form or College.

Support for hearing impairment

Teachers of the Deaf work with deaf children from diagnosis (often through new-born screening for hearing soon after birth) to leaving school at the ages of 18 and 19. The Outreach Service provides advice to parents and professionals working with or supporting deaf children and there are close working arrangements with colleagues in Health and Social Care.

The support offered at St Clere's resource base aims to promote independence and confidence to it's pupils, while supporting their progress both within mainstream lessons and in small group sessions. We have range of specialist staff, including teachers of the deaf and communication support workers, who use multi communication such as British Sign language and Signed Support English etc, to communicate with our students.

In addition, advice is provided from Grays library one day a week and a communication facilitator works part-time in out of school clubs.

Support for visual impairment

The level of support required for a child with a visual impairment, varies according to individual need. At Stanford-le-Hope Primary school all efforts are made to match the level of support offered to the actual need of each child. Individual teaching is provided for learning Braille, touch-typing, the use of specialist equipment and speech software and for Mobility Instruction.

St Clere's School hosts the secondary resource base for visually impaired pupils and the Thurrock Outreach Service for visually impaired children from birth to 19 years.

The resource base supports pupils with a visual impairment within the mainstream school providing an inclusive environment. Pupils are supported by qualified teachers for visual impairment and a team of specialist support staff. Independence skills are promoted through specialist teaching in Braille, mobility and skills for independent living. The outreach service provides support to children, their families and professionals. The service will provide functional vision assessments, individual tuition in Braille and independence skills, advice including appropriate technology, information and training opportunities.
