Sensory Impairment Support

Hearing Impairment Support

Introduction

There are two resourced schools in Thurrock:

Pre-school children often attend their local provision and some children continue into full time education at a local school. Post-16 pupils may choose to continue their education at Thurrock College or Palmers College in Thurrock.

Two qualified teachers of deaf children work directly for Children, Education and Families. They work with deaf children from diagnosis to leaving school. Advice is offered to parents and professionals working with or supporting deaf children and there are close working arrangements with colleagues in Health and Social Care.

A Sign Language Tutor works part-time with children and adults and a Communication Facilitator works part-time in After School Clubs.

The needs of deaf children are as varied as those for hearing children; Thurrock Local Authority continues to assess and resource children's individual needs.

Visual Impairment Support

There are two resourced schools for children with visual impairment in Thurrock: Stanford-le-Hope Primary School and St Clere's School, also in Stanford-le-Hope.

Speech & Language Support

Introduction

It has been recognised that a number of primary schools in Thurrock are employing good practice in their support of children with Speech and Language Needs, and that other schools might like to observe the use of certain strategies and perhaps adopt similar approaches.

Six schools have agreed to be Advice Centres and have provided an outline of the work that they do:
