Events are taking place around Thurrock to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the World War II D-Day Normandy landings, which took place on 6 June 1944.

22 May 2024 – D-Day and Thurrock's Story: Exhibition preview

A special D-Day exhibition at the Thameside Complex, Grays will run from 25 May to 28 June. Ahead of the exhibition opening, a preview of its highlights will be on display in the Town Hall in Grays.

This preview takes place at the same time as the Annual Council meeting, where a new Mayor is elected. The meeting takes place in the Town Hall Council Chamber from 7pm.

Where: Town Hall, south end of High Street, Grays.

25 May to 28 June 2024 – D-Day and Thurrock's Story: Exhibition

An exhibition at the Thameside Complex will tell the story of D-Day and the roles played by people from Thurrock. The exhibition will be on the ground floor and free to enter.

Where: Thameside Complex, Orsett Road, Grays, RM17 5DX.

1 June 2024 – D-Day and Thurrock's Story: Exhibition official launch

On 1 June there will be an official launch event at the exhibition. Family activities will take place throughout the day, helping to educate young people about the story of D-Day and why it remains so important to this day.

1 June 2024 – Film: 'The Great Escaper'

The Great Escaper is a film based on the true story of 89 year-old British World War II Royal Navy veteran Bernard Jordan who "broke out" of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France in June 2014.

The film is showing at Thameside Theatre on 1 June from 2:30pm. To book your tickets, go to Thameside Theatre: The Great Escaper. Tickets cost £4 per person.

6 June 2024 – D-Day 80th Anniversary Events

A full programme of commemorative events across the borough is currently being finalised. These events will include community gatherings, flag raising, beacon lighting and much more.
