By applying to the Register Office where the event was first registered. For example, a child who was born in Basildon, the record will be held in the Brentwood District Office (01277 233565), and a child born in Tilbury the record will be held in the Grays Thurrock Office or a Marriage in Corringham will be held either by the Church or Grays Thurrock Register Office.
For a civil marriage you need to give a notice of marriage to the Superintendent Registrar in the area in which you are living. To give notice of marriage you will need to book an appointment with your local Register Office. It is advisable for you to arrange and book the place in which you intend to be married as soon as possible.
For a religious marriage please contact the minister of the church in question.
You will be required to produce a current valid passport and/or two other forms of identification, for example, a driving licence, birth certificate or national identity card and proof of address, e.g. bank statement, utility bill, rent book (this list is not exhaustive). Your mother's or father's birth certificate must be presented if you were born after 1983 unless a current passport is presented.
If you have been married before, you will be required to prove your freedom to re-marry, a decree absolute for persons who's marriage ended in divorce, a death certificate if you have been widowed.
