What is a web feed?

Thurrock Council's web feeds allow you to see when certain types of new content has been added to the web site. You can get news headlines, job adverts and consultation notices, as soon as they are published, without having to visit the council's site for updates. Feeds are just web pages designed to be read by computers rather than people.

The two main web feed formats are RSS and Atom. You may hear the term RSS used to refer to web feeds in general, although not all feed formats are actually RSS. There is no clear agreement as to what RSS stands for, but most common is 'Really Simple Syndication'. Thurrock Council's web feeds use the Atom format.

Getting started with web feeds

To get started you will need a 'feed reader' - also known as an 'aggregator' or 'RSS reader' - for your computer. There are many different readers available, including web-based feed readers, and readers that you can download to your computer.

A useful list of web-based feed readers is available on DMOZ: WWW Feed Readers Web Based. A list of readers that you can download is provided on Wikipedia: Comparison of feed aggregators (please note that Thurrock Council does not endorse the use of any specific feed aggregator, and takes no responsibility for the implementation of, use of, or support for any feed aggregator included in this list.)

Once you have registered to use - or downloaded and installed - a reader, copy each of the links in the 'Available web feeds' list (above) and paste into your reader.

The BBC has excellent support for feeds, including some good resources and information. Visit News feeds from the BBC.
