Aiming High for Disabled Children and Young People

The activities at Grangewaters have successfully developed over the last 27 years into a large number of high quality sessions, taught by a competent and professional staff team.

All activity sessions follow strict guidelines and safe practice. Grangewaters has also achieved the necessary standards of the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, are approved by the British Canoe Union and the Royal Yachting Association.

Where possible all activities can accommodate all abilities and ages. Please ring the centre for any restrictions. All activity sessions follow a standard structure. Each initially starts with a safety brief, followed by demonstrations and practice. This structure allows all sessions to follow safe practice.

Abseiling

Abseiling is a mountaineer's technique for re-treating from a mountain. It's a challenging activity located at the top of the climbing tower, which sees each participant abseiling down the outside of the wall using mountaineering equipment and safety ropes. This is a confidence boosting activity, which leaves those that attempt it with a real sense of achievement with an increased trust in their own ability and that of others.

Archery

Shoot for gold on this rewarding and exciting activity. Each participant will take turns on the range and shoot for the targets positioned up to 10 metres from the line. The range includes a dedicated shelter for poor weather and a number of different target faces to keep the interest of the participants. Great activity for improving dexterity and precision.

Assault Course

Using a challenging course with climbing obstacles, group problem solving obstacles, underground obstacles, swinging tyres and water obstacles. This activity provides a challenge for all. It's fun, muddy and wet and will encourage groups to work together on team challenges, have you got what it takes?.

Camp Craft

Pitching a tent, cooking using Outdoor stoves and learning to live and survive Outdoors can be fun in a group. This covers all the essential skills required to camp outside. Don't forget your baked beans!.

Canoe Rafting

A team activity that involves the joining of two canoes using ropes and straps to make a craft capable of holding up to 10 participants. Using paddling skills the group will travel around the lake, whilst taking part in games situated on and off the water. Try 'walk the plank' or try to stay dry whilst moving from canoe to canoe!.

Cave Ladder Climb

Using a caving ladder suspended within the central shaft of the climbing tower, participants climb 12 meters to the top platform. Participants are then shown a safe way of ascending and descending the shaft using the ladder, ropes and climbing equipment.

Climbing

Climbing is an exhilarating and challenging activity. Using Grangewaters custom built 300m2 climbing tower participants will climb in small groups, in which they will also learn to safely climb and control ropes. This is an extremely engaging activity that encourages each participant to try and achieve what they thought may not be possible. Climbing places emphasis on trust, working together and achieving realistic goals. Climbing routes can be graded and aimed at all abilities.

Conservation

The Grangewaters site offers a variety of possibilities for conservation including woodland, water and water margin areas. We offer training in measures to encourage wildlife and support the survival of native plants and trees as well as a place to be enjoyed and appreciated by us human beings. Programmes can be developed to meet the needs of all age groups and can be linked to curriculum requirements.

Dinghy Sailing

Ever had the ambition to sail, well now's your chance? As a Royal Yachting Association training centre, Grangewaters can offer anything from taster sessions through to National Governing Bodied courses. Our fleet of boats ensures that any ability can be catered for on our 25-acre lake. Use single-handed dinghies or crew three man sailing boats.

Expedition Training

Winter is not normally the season for expeditions but it is the ideal time for preparation for next year. We offer training in all aspects of expeditions including campcraft, route planning, camp cooking group and personal safety and everything to help an expedition to be a safe and enjoyable learning experience.

First Aid Training

First aid can be a valuable life skill for any age. Grangewaters can provide a fun, informative group session aimed at the age, ability and skills of the group or individual. This can vary from an attendance course, which covers the basics through to the H.S.E First aid at work course that on completion is valid for 3 years and covers H.S.E legislation for first aid provision. Each course, will involve practical and theory sessions and realistic first aid scenarios.

Fun Boards

Balance and initiative, combined with water and fun provide the necessary ingredients for an action packed session. Using a large windsurf board the group will be split into pairs. A number of group balance games and races will be played on the Watersports Lake; this is a guaranteed wet session and an excellent introduction to board skills on water.

High Ropes

A facility unmatched at the centre. Using a number of different challenging elements, which extend to 12 metres in height, participants can really challenge pre-conceptions on what is possible. The course is designed for all to be involved, whether climbing or controlling safety ropes. High Ropes is educational, fun and exciting. See elements of the high ropes.

Kayaking

Fun, wet and full of games, a great activity for groups that keeps everyone involved. As an Olympic sport kayaking is increasing in popularity and as a British Canoe Union approved centre Grangewaters can offer a whole Range of sessions from Paddle Power Start for younger children to certificated courses for adults. These are rewarding skills sessions, where participants can achieve much in a short space of time.

Longboat Sailing

A boat designed to hold and sail up to 10 participants. Help work the sheets and sails in a boat that is extremely stable and aimed at primary and special schools.

Mountain Biking

Riding a mountain bike off road on small trails and hills on a supervised session is hugely enjoyable and fun. Safe riding technique is also taught within the session, which leads to better handling of the bike. The trails and rides used are aimed at most abilities. The centre also has bikes specially designed for those with mobility issues, including a wheel chair bike and trike bikes.

Navigation

Sat Navs are not always useful! We offer training in the skills needed to enable accurate navigation using map and compass, map interpretation and practical use of navigation skills. Programmes can be tailored to meet curriculum requirements or expedition needs and can be delivered on our site or at a venue of your choice, including navigation practice in unfamiliar areas.

Open Canoeing

Open boating is ideal for mixed ability groups. Participants split into pairs and learn the basic paddling stokes, this will enable each team to learn the skills essential to navigate around the lake. This is an engaging activity that is ideal for active groups.

Orienteering

Reading a map is a valuable skill. Orienteering allows for a competitive application of navigational skills, which is quick and easy to learn. Participants are split into small groups and taught the basics of map reading which once learnt will allow them to navigate around a pre-set course of posts. An active and rewarding activity.

Power Boats

Grangewaters fleet of powerboats can be used for smaller groups to learn the basics of handling a powerboat under the supervision of an experienced instructor. As an R.Y.A training centre, Grangewaters can provide certificated courses for participants over the age of 12.

Raft Building

Will you get wet or not? Well that all depends on how well the team designs and builds the raft. Using barrels, planks, ropes and poles the team will design, build and then race the raft on a set course on Grangewaters' watersports lake. Learn how to tie knots, have fun and stay afloat. This is a great activity for large numbers.

Residential

Visit Grangewaters and stay in in our comfortable log cabins. Groups can stay from one to seven nights, can be catered or self-catered, activities can also be included throughout the day and evening.

Sailing

Wayfarer, Topper and Pico dinghy sailing on our 26-acre lake provides participants with the basics of sailing in a safe and exciting environment. Further skills courses leading to R.Y.A sailing levels are also available.

Survival

The human species has established itself in almost every corner of the earth. Almost everywhere nature provides the necessities for survival. In places the provision is abundant, in others very meagre and it takes common sense, knowledge and ingenuity to take advantage of the resources available. During the session participants will build shelters from natural materials, learn navigation using nature as it's source and learn some valuable emergency first aid techniques. All aspects of the session can be delivered using themes and scenarios.

Team Building

A group of up to 10 participants use a number of challenging tasks to help develop skills of working together, communication and leadership within a team environment. These tasks are supervised, supported and encouraged by a competent member of instructional staff. The tasks vary; some require active physical involvement for success others require the group to think and use a common sense approach (examples of team building).

Zip Line

Rumoured to be the longest zip line or aerial runway in the UK that travels over water, participants will cover over 200 metres from the top of the climbing tower, across the corner of the Watersports Lake and landing on the East bank. This is a fun, challenging and exhilarating activity. All you have to do is step off?

Elements of the High Ropes

Postman's Walk
An element at three levels of height. Balance and walk across a raised beam 4 metres from the floor. Then climb to a wire at 8 metres; this is crossed using a rope for the hands to balance on. Continue to the top wire, which is crossed using multi vine ropes hanging down for the hands.
Crate Stack
Ever tried to balance on a stack of milk crates, if not well now's your chance. Whilst attached to safety ropes, two participants will try to build and balance on top of the crates, whilst supported by the rest of the team. Build and balance as high as you can until gravity takes affect and the stack topples over!
Leap of Faith
How far can you jump? Climb a telegraph pole to a small platform at a height of 10 metres. Climb onto the platform, steady yourself and get ready to jump for a trapeze bar positioned on a hanging chain. This element challenges all who try but leaves everyone with a real sense of achievement.
Peg Climb
A telegraph pole with many holes in, is climbed using metal pegs, the pegs are then used to gain height for feet and hands. Climb to the platform and you have made a successful ascent. Four climbers can climb at any one time.
Fan Descender
The biggest adrenalin rush at the centre, have you got what it takes? A simulated parachute jump situated at the top of the climbing tower. Attached to a metal cable, you need to make the decision to jump from the tower at a height of 12 metres. A fan will slow your descent, until seconds later you will gently touch down on the ground.
Jacob's Ladder
Great team activity. Jacob's ladder is situated on the East of the high ropes course and is a swinging ladder of small horizontal telegraph poles attached to thick wire ropes. Up to four climbers climb together and try to reach the top helping each other on the way.
All Aboard
How many climbers can fit on a 50cm2 platform, well up to four if you try the all aboard element? The platform is reached by climbing a 10 metre high telegraph pole; this is achieved by working together as a team. An element that is great for building and developing teamwork and confidence.

Examples of Team Building

Spider's Web
The team start the task on one side of a large spiders web, the team must cross through the web without touching it, as this will awaken the spider. The team must work together to help each other through.
Skis
The team step onto two large skis, one foot on either ski. Using ropes to hold and communicating with each other the team must start to walk a set route. Timing and teamwork is crucial for success.
Duck Rescue
The team are presented with a tube with many holes in. A plastic duck must be rescued that has fallen into the tube. In order to do this the team must fill the tube with water to raise the duck to the top. The water will leak from the holes in the tube, in order to succeed the team must work together to block the holes using only themselves.
