Thurrock's character and personality has formed and evolved over centuries as agriculture, industry and the River Thames have shaped the landscape, the make-up of its people and the quality of life.

The enduring characteristics of those who live or have lived and worked in Thurrock - enterprise, resilience, opportunism, adaptability - represent a strength of spirit.

2011 marks the 75th anniversary of a Thurrock-wide council and the start of a new phase of opportunity for the next generation - the next generation of young people, older people, families, vulnerable people - the next generation of people who have an opportunity to benefit from the future prosperity of the borough.

The 75th anniversary year officially started in April and we will be involving all residents in a programme of events and activities that look back and look forwards.

1988 - did you know...?

In 1988 Thurrock commemorated the 400th anniversary of the attempt by the Spanish Armada (fleet) to invade England.

Tilbury Block House (now Tilbury Fort) was re-armed and the cavalry and infantry were assembled at West Tilbury to wait for the invasion in the Thames.

A replica set of fire beacons were set up at Fobbing, East Tilbury and Purfleet and a huge pageant was performed at Tilbury Fort, where actress Kate O'Mara played Queen Elizabeth I (left).

Also in 1988 the construction of Chafford Hundred housing estate began.
