Parish of Stanford-le-Hope
- Joseph Conrad, Polish novelist and naturalised British citizen, in 1896 moves to Stanford-le-Hope, first to a semi-detached villa in Victoria Road and later across the town to a timber framed medieval farmstead called 'Ivy Walls' in Billet Lane. While at Stanford-le-Hope he completes some of his novels, like Heart of Darkness and Niger of the Narcissus. His first son Boris was born here.
