The ruling Conservative Party lost one seat following two by-elections in Thurrock on Thursday (1 December).

The by-elections were held in the Grays Riverside ward where former councillor Val Morris-Cook retained the seat for Labour, following the resignation of Denise Cooper; and The Homestead, where another former Labour councillor, Tony Benson, took the seat from the Conservatives.

The results were as follows:

Emma Colgate (BNP) 340
John Livermore (Lib Dem) 92

Labour Majority 227
Turnout 20 per cent.

The Homesteads ward
Tony Benson (Lab) 661
Pauline Tolson (Con) 534
Paul Riley (Lib Dem) 220
John Cotter (BNP) 150

Labour Majority 232
Turnout 23.2 per cent.

The overall make-up of Thurrock Council is now: Conservative 27, Labour 20, Independent 2.
