Future Population of Thurrock

This chart shows government estimates for the population of Thurrock up to 2021 (as summarised in the table below).

These projections show increased levels of growth in the population from that experienced in the past. The main reasons for this are a forecast natural growth in the population as people tend to live longer, as well as a net migration of people into the Borough.

Summary of 2001 Census

The Census of the Population, which is carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) every ten years, is the primary source of information about the population. Some of the main findings of the last Census, carried out in 2001, are summarised below:

• Age

  Of the total population of 143,128:

  • 34,891 (24%) were children (0-17)
  • 89,558 (63%) were adults (18-64)
  • 9,975 (7%) were elderly (65-74)
  • 8,704 (6%) were very elderly (75+)

• Ethnic Minorities

  Make up only 6,729 (4.7%) of the population.

• Households

  • There were 58,485 households in Thurrock.
  • 16,012 (27.4%) were one person
  • 22,967 (39.3%) were married couple
  • 6,242 (10.7%) were cohabiting couple
  • 5,934 (10.1%) were lone parent
  • 7,330 (12.5%) were all other households

• Single Parents

  There were 3,864 single parent households (with dependent children) in Thurrock (6.61% of all households). This is represents the fourth highest proportion of single parents in Essex after Harlow, Basildon and Southend.

• Employment Structure

  • 73,285 people were economically active.
  • 47,365 (65%) were working full time.
  • 12,927 (17.5%) were working part time.
  • 7,337 (10%) were self employed.
  • 5,656 (7.5%) were unemployed or other.

• Qualifications

  There were 102,996 people aged 16-74.

  • 35,487 (34.6%) had no qualifications
  • 22,191 (21.5%) had 1+ GCSE or equivalent
  • 20,750 (20%) had 5+ GCSE's or equivalent
  • 6,259 (6.3%) had 2+ A-Levels or equivalent
  • 10,183 (9.9%) had a degree or higher
  • 7,926 (7.7%) had other qualifications

Population and Households in Thurrock

The number of households increased from 49,111 in 1991 to 58,485 in 2001 (an increase of 16%). The average size of each household (average number/people living in each house) has fallen as a result of the fact that there are more people living alone now than in 1991 (including single parent households, OAP's).

• Average household size 1981 - 2.9 persons per household.
• Average household size 1991 - 2.6 persons.
• Average household size 2001 - 2.4 persons.
