Who can have a blue badge?

The blue badge scheme is parking concessions given to people with severe disability who find it hard to use public transport.

Who can have a blue badge?

You can apply for a badge if you are over two years old and:

• receive Disability Living Allowance higher mobility component (you cannot walk or need help getting around), or
• are registered blind, or
• receive a War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement, or
• have a permanent and substantial disability which means you cannot walk, or which makes walking very difficult, or
• drive a motor vehicle regularly, have a severe disability in both arms, and are unable to operate all or some types of parking meter (or would find it very difficult to operate them)

If you have a child who is less than two years old, you may apply for a badge if they have a specific medical condition and need,

• bulky medical equipment which are hard to carrying around
• to be kept near a vehicle at all times, so that they can be treated in the vehicle, or quickly driven to a hospital

Organisations caring for people may also qualify for a badge at the council's discretion.

Misusing the blue badges

Thurrock Council issues blue badges only to people who meet the criteria, not their relatives or carers. We can fine or take away your badge if you misuse it. For example:

• allowing other people to use it, or
• continuing to use it even when your disability improves

Blue Badges must be properly displayed at all times on the dashboard. The side with the wheelchair symbol and expiry date must be on show, along with the clock with appropriate times displayed.

Always remove the badge when you are not using it.
