Bike Week Everyday cycling for everyone, 16-24 June 2012.

Bike Week is the UK's biggest mass participation cycling event, with almost half a million people participating at events across the country. The aim is to promote everyday cycling for everyone and to get more people cycling, more often.

Here are some of the Bike Week events going on in and around Thurrock in 2012:

Saturday 16 June

Regents Canal & Central London bike ride - now re-scheduled to Saturday 23 June (see below)

Sunday 17 June

Davy Down bike rides, noon to 3pm

Quick bike checks before the start of any ride. Bike rides from noon till 3pm depending on cyclists joining the rides. Meet at noon, 1pm and 2pm. The rides will be easy and last for about 20 minutes. The ride may be enjoyed by all ages, but bikes with stabilisers are not suitable. Davy Down's Steve Mitchell will also be organising fun activities for the whole family for before or after your bike ride. There is no need to book in advance, just turn up on the day. Friday 22 June

Free bike checks for all, Grays, 8am to 11am

In front of Civic Offices, New Road, Grays. Get a bike safety check on the spot - faults will be adjusted where possible.

River Front bike ride, noon to 1pm

To take part in this lunchtime bike ride, meet at noon in front of the Civic Offices, New Road, Grays and enjoy a lovely fresh ride alongside the River Thames. Saturday 23 June

Regents Canal & Central London bike ride

This ride is suitable for moderate to experienced cyclists. Ride Leaders are Bob & Jon - telephone 07778 533633 or 07845 928596. Meet at Grays Station 10am. Travel by train to Limehouse. The ride will include cycle paths adjoining the canals and some roads. Riders must be able to cope with busy roads/cycle paths. The terrain being mostly flat with good surfaces means that all bikes are suitable for this ride. The distance is about 20/25 miles at a pace of 7-9 miles per hour. It will be an all-day ride with a couple of refreshment/comfort breaks.

Ride around RSPB Marshes, Purfleet, from noon

This is ride is approximately four miles long, lasting around 45 minutes, and is recommended for families with older children. Please ensure you bring snacks and drinks. The RSPB centre at the marshes is also well worth the visit. Please book a space on the ride with Katie van Dop beforehand by emailing katie.van-dop@sustrans.org.uk or calling 07810 808 554.

Sunday 24 June

Adult Cycle Training, 10am to 1pm

This three hour training course teaches tips on how to cycle safely on the road with other road users. It is suitable for people who are already confident cycling on two wheels. If you want to learn how to ride a bike from scratch, please do not hesitate to contact Katie van Dop for more info.
