New rules from 2021
The UK left the European Union (EU) at 11pm on 31 January 2020.
Following this withdrawal – called 'Brexit', short for 'British exit' – the UK and EU negotiated what their future relationship would look like. This period of negotiation was called the 'transition' period.
The transition period ended at 11pm on 31 December 2020.
