Coronavirus (COVID-19) – financial support for businesses and the self-employed

For information on assistance with business rates and government cash grants for businesses, go to our business rates pages. For those who are self-employed, we are providing financial assistance for the self-employed in the form of deferred council tax payments.

The government is providing a range of measures to support businesses through the period of disruption caused by COVID-19. For details, go to GOV.UK: business support and GOV.UK: financial support for businesses during coronavirus (COVID-19).

Coronavirus (COVID-19) assistance

The government has announced support to protect businesses during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak – go to GOV.UK: Chancellor announces additional support to protect businesses.

Assistance with business rates

Our business rate bills for 2020/21 were posted before these announcements, but we will send new bills as soon as possible. In the meantime, we have suspended business rates payments in April 2020 for all businesses. This means:

  • no payment will be taken from any business in April, allowing time for reliefs or grants to be applied and bills to be reissued

  • businesses that don't benefit from government support, or with residual amounts to pay, will get new bills that spread their due amounts over 11 months from May 2020 to March 2021

Small Business Grants Fund (SBGF)

The Small Business Grant Fund supports small businesses that already pay little or no business rates because of small business rate relief (SBRR), rural rate relief (RRR) and tapered relief. It provides a one-off grant of £10,000 to help meet their ongoing business costs.

As a business in Thurrock, you are eligible if:

  • you are a business that occupies property
  • you are receiving small business rate relief or rural rate relief as of 11 March

Cash grants for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses

The Retail and Hospitality Grant Scheme provides businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors with a cash grant of:

  • £10,000 for each property with a rateable value of up to £15,000
  • £25,000 for each property with a rateable value of over £15,000 and less than £51,000

As a business in Thurrock, you are eligible if your business has a rateable value of under £51,000 and occupies properties that are wholly or mainly being used:

  • as shops, restaurants, cafes, drinking establishments, cinemas or live music venues
  • for assembly or leisure
  • as hotels, guest houses, boarding premises or self-catering accommodation
