Use the Nationality Checking Service to apply for British Citizenship.
The Nationality Checking Service is a partnership between the Home Office UK Visas and Immigration and Thurrock Council.
We are not immigration advisors and cannot give immigration advice.
We do not provide the Nationality Document Return Service (NDRS) or Joint Citizenship and Passport Service (JCAP) – go to GOV.UK: Nationality Document Return Service for offices that may be able to help.
Using this service
Using our service:
- does not guarantee the success of your application
- does not speed up the process
Before you book an appointment, you should download and read the Home Office guide and booklet to make sure you meet all the requirements for applying for British citizenship.
You also need to have completed your application form to make sure you meet the qualifications for residency and were in the country at the start of either the 3-year or 5-year qualifying period.
Contact the Home Office if you have any specific questions about immigration.
What our advisers will do
Our advisers will check that all applications for British nationality are:
- completed correctly
- submitted with the right documents
- submitted with the correct fee
All the necessary documents will be photocopied, certified and sent with the application to the Home Office. This means that you do not have to send the originals of your important documents, such as passports and marriage certificates to the Home Office.
Complete and accurate applications tend to be dealt with more quickly by the Home Office than applications that are incomplete or involve further enquiries. The time to process each application varies depending on individual circumstances and how many applications are being processed at the same time.
If you live in an area that does not provide a checking service you can submit your application to us, or any participating local authority service. Alternatively, you can send your application direct to the Home Office yourself or to use a solicitor or other agent.
Your application and appointment
Download an application for British citizenship from GOV.UK: become a British citizen.
A non-refundable fee of £75 per application must be paid by debit or credit card when making your booking.
You can book your appointment with us by logging-in to our My Account services and selecting 'Registrar appointments'. You can create an account if you don't already have one.
If you cancel your booking or do not bring the necessary supporting documents, meaning we are unable to complete your interview, you will need to make a new appointment and pay the full fee again.
Contact UK Visas and Immigration if you have any doubt about your eligibility.
Changing your appointment date or time
You should give at least 24-hours written notice if you need to cancel or change your appointment. A £25 admin fee is payable if the date of your appointment is changed.
We will charge the full fee for:
- failure to attend
- cancelling or changing your appointment date with less than 24-hours notice
You should contact the government UK Visas and Immigration service if you need nationality advice. You can either:
- contact UK Visas and Immigration from inside the UK
- contact UK Visas and Immigration from outside the UK
We do not provide advice on nationality matters.
