Who gets a discount

A full council tax bill is based on at least 2 adults living in a home.

Who counts as an adult

To check who counts as an adult for council tax, go to our page on discounts if you live with people who don't count as adults for council tax.

Single person discount

You get 25% off your bill if you count as an adult for council tax and live on your own.

You can apply for a single person discount by logging-in to My Account. You can create an account if you don't already have one.

You can use My Account to cancel your single person discount if your circumstances change.

Discounts for disabled people

You can get a council tax discount if you are disabled, or if you have a disabled adult or child living permanently with you. Go to discount for disabled people.

Other discounts

From 1 April 2023, we no longer provide:

  • discounts for properties undergoing major alterations or repairs
  • discounts on empty properties for up to 1 month

Some properties may be fully exempt or charged a premium.

Claiming discounts

You should claim discounts when you first qualify.

If you get a discount, you must tell us straight away if your circumstances change.
