Deaths, burials and cremations

Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Thurrock Register Office

Thurrock Register Office is closed until further notice.

Registering a death – we are taking appointments by phone to register a death. Deaths must be registered within 5 days from the date of death.

You will need to contact the GP's surgery to confirm that the 'Medical Certificate of Cause of Death' will be scanned and sent by email to register.office@thurrock.gov.uk before your appointment. If the death has been referred to the coroner, you need to make sure their documents have been emailed to us before booking your appointment. To book your appointment, phone 01375 372 822.

On the date and time of your appointment, we will phone you to take information for completing the registration. We will also arrange to send you a death certificate, if you wish to order one. Paperwork for the funeral will be sent direct to your undertaker.

Birth registration, marriage or civil partnership notice or ceremony, citizenship ceremony and other requests – no other Register Office appointments can be made until further notice. During this period, you can claim child benefit or Universal Credit before your baby's birth has been registered. If you wish to cancel or postpone a ceremony, please email register.office@thurrock.gov.uk.

Stillbirths

Parents who suffer a stillbirth must register the stillbirth of the child within 3 months.

An appointment should be made as usual, and it is the intention of the register office that you be seen as soon as possible.

The mother can register the stillbirth but the father can only do this if he was married to the mother at the time of the stillbirth. If the parents are not married, the father must attend the registration if he wishes his name to go in the register.

You will need to bring with you a form from the medical practitioner or midwife who was present at the stillbirth. This form is called a Medical Certificate of Stillbirth.

You will need to provide the following information:

  • date and place of stillbirth
  • forename and surname of the baby (you do not have to give the baby a forename)
  • the parents' forenames and surnames
  • the place of birth of each parent
  • the occupation of each parent
  • usual address of each parent
  • date of birth of each parent
  • date of marriage (if married)
  • mother's maiden name (if applicable)

You will be provided with a certificate of registration for which there is no charge.

You may purchase a full certificate of stillbirth.
