Coronavirus (COVID-19) – marriages and civil partnerships

Due to national restrictions set by the government, civil ceremonies for marriage and civil partnerships cannot take place from 5 November to 2 December. If your ceremony was due to take place during this time, we will contact you ask that you email your request for a new date and time to register.office@thurrock.gov.uk – we will contact you as soon as possible.

From 5 November to 2 December, the Register Office is open for pre-booked appointments only.

You must not come to the Register Office if you or anyone in your household has symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). All visitors must follow government social distancing guidance and safety requests from staff.

Approved premises in Thurrock

It is possible to be married in any approved premises in England or Wales, regardless of where you reside. Go to GOV.UK: Civil marriages and partnerships – approved premises list .

The following approved premises are all located within the Thurrock Registration Area.

Thurrock Register Office rooms

Currently we are only able to carry out marriage ceremonies that use traditional ceremony wording. You don't need to have a ceremony if you are forming a civil partnership.

Our Hawthorn Suite can currently accommodate a maximum of 15 people in the wedding party, including:

  • the couple
  • 2 witnesses
  • guests, including any children or babies, if you wish

In addition, 2 registrars will be present, and you may invite a photographer and videographer.

Our Lacey Room can currently accommodate a maximum of 12 people in total, including:

  • the couple
  • 2 witnesses
  • 2 registrars
  • guests, including any children or babies, if you wish
  • a photographer, if you wish
  • a videographer, if you wish

Our Register Office can accommodate only:

  • the couple
  • 2 witnesses
  • the registrar

Opening hours:

  • Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm – all services
  • Saturday morning – ceremonies only

Our emergency out-of-hours contact service can be used for:

  • emergency death registrations for timely burials in line with religious or cultural practices
  • emergency marriages or civil partnerships for terminally ill residents.

Thameside Theatre

The Thameside Theatre is licensed for ceremonies, but is currently closed.

When open with coronavirus safety restrictions in place, the theatre can accommodate a maximum of 15 people in the wedding party, including:

  • the couple
  • 2 witnesses
  • guests, including any children or babies, if you wish

In addition, 2 registrars will be present, and you may invite a photographer and videographer.

When fully re-opened without government restrictions for coronavirus, the theatre's facilities include:

  • luxurious seating for up to 300 guests
  • foyer and bar area
  • bespoke catering available
  • amazing lighting and backdrop possibilities with technical staff expertise
  • front of house staff
