Thurrock Council Leader, Cllr Rob Gledhill is urging residents to stay alert as pubs, restaurants, cafes, cinemas and hairdressers are able re-open this weekend.
Cllr Gledhill said: "I am pleased to see that even more businesses are able to open as we continue making strides in beating this pandemic. I know many people are looking forward to having a drink or a meal out and visiting the hairdressers.
"However, it's vital that we remember that we have achieved these changes thanks to residents' sacrifice, determination and diligence in following social distancing advice and we need to continue to follow this guidance to make sure we all play our part and do not lose these additional freedoms.
"As we have seen in the news, the continuing easing of lockdown restrictions is entirely dependent on us keeping the transmission rate down. If we are unable to do that then stricter measures could be re-introduced locally.
"Social distancing rules are still in place. It’s still not possible for large groups of friends or family to meet indoors, even at pubs and restaurants.
"To avoid disappointment you should also call in advance of travelling to the pub, restaurant or hairdressers to see if they are opening, what restrictions are in place and if they are only taking bookings."
To control the risk of infection and stay safe residents should:
- follow the signage and guidance in any premises they go to
- keep the recommended safe distance from one another and follow current social distancing guidelines
- wash their hands as often as possible for example they get home or arrive at work
- avoid public transport where at all possible
