Site visit offers update on project to create 53 new council homes

30 May 2019

Work is progressing well with the construction of 53 new homes in Chadwell St Mary as part of Thurrock Council's £32million investment in new council homes for affordable rent for people on the borough's housing register.

The timber frames of the new council homes in Claudian Way are currently being installed in readiness for roof coverings and brickwork, while the construction of new roads and drainage is also progressing. The project is on track to be completed in spring 2020.

The development, which is being constructed by United Living, includes 22 flats, 10 houses and 21 bungalows – 3 of which will be wheelchair accessible. All the new homes will be allocated to Thurrock residents through the council's housing allocations scheme.

Work is also progressing on Thurrock Council's new housing developments in Argent Street in Grays and Calcutta Road in Tilbury.

Cllr Barry Johnson, portfolio holder for housing, was joined for a site visit of the Claudian Way project by ward members Cllr Sara Muldowney, Cllr Daniel Chukwu and Cllr Gerard Rice last Friday (24 May).

Cllr Johnson said: "We believe everyone should have a good quality home and are committed to investing in new council homes for our residents that are both a high standard and affordable to those who are eligible. It is fantastic to see work on the Claudian Way project is progressing well.

"Work is currently under way on 3 schemes that will create a total of 117 new council homes in Thurrock, while we are also developing proposals for up to 500 more over the next 5 to 10 years.

"We are also working with social landlords to provide further low-cost housing, as well as with private developers to ensure that emerging housing schemes include much-needed affordable housing."

Colin Chandler, Operation Manager at United Living, said: "We are proud of the progress that is being made at our site in Claudian Way. We are creating 53 new affordable homes on behalf of Thurrock Council and the site is really starting to take shape.

"The properties are a mix of bungalows, flats and more traditional homes, and we believe it will add to the already thriving community."
