Give a Gift delivers more magic to Christmas this year

17 December 2018

The Give a Gift unit came to a close last week having received presents for more than 2,400 Thurrock children in need this Christmas.

In addition to the thousands of gifts generously donated, £15,536.76 was donated to Giving for Thurrock (GiFT), the local community fund run by Thurrock CVS, supporting projects for Children and Young People across Thurrock.

Based at intu Lakeside and open for just 2 weeks, the Give a Gift unit saw hundreds of visitors choose a star off the Christmas tree, each representing a child in need in Thurrock, before heading out shopping for a gift to donate.

Now all the presents have been received, they are in the process of being

  • checked by Thurrock Council's social work teams
  • wrapped by council volunteers
  • hand delivered to the children in time for Christmas day

Cllr Sue Little, portfolio holder for social care, said: "Once again Thurrock has embraced Give a Gift and has donated so many amazing gifts for children across the borough who might not otherwise get a present on Christmas morning.

"It's overwhelming to see that for the third year running, and even with more than 700 additional stars on the tree compared to last year, Thurrock has once again shown what such a kind, caring and thoughtful community it is.

"Thank you to everyone who donated a gift, our volunteers and of course all the local businesses who have supported the initiative."
