Friendship Club re-launches and celebrates the Platinum Jubilee

30 May 2022

Thurrock Council has today (Monday 30 May) re-opened the doors of the Friendship Club, following a 2-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event was also an opportunity for those who use the Friendship Club to come together with the service and celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Cream teas were enjoyed, as were activities in the garden, performances from the Friendship Club Choir, and the official re-opening of the centre.

Cllr Deb Huelin, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: "It has been an honour to cut the ribbon and re-launch the Friendship Club today. This is such an important service for vulnerable adults in our borough.

"Following successful funding bids, as part of the re-launch, the programme of activities available at our day care centre has been extended. An outdoor gym has been installed and a refurbishment of the building has allowed us to introduce arts and crafts facilities, a games room and an interactive table, with plans for more outdoor activities and day trips to be introduced in the near future.

"The Friendship Choir continues to be well received. It was wonderful to hear them sing today, and the service regularly invites guest speakers and bring in external activities for service users to enjoy.

"Where the Friendship Club was unable to open during the pandemic lockdowns, it's been inspiring to hear how the expansion and popularity of the sitting service has been received across the borough, with support for our vulnerable adults and respite for carers being taken directly into residents' homes."

The Friendship Club, in Grays, is an adult day care service that provides activities for elderly and vulnerable residents, and a chance to catch up with friends over a hot lunch and a coffee. It also allows informal carers some time to themselves during the day.
