World War 2 memories come to life

Find out what World War 2 (WWII) was really like for people living in the borough at a free exhibition in Grays.
Residents can discover how the war affected Thurrock in the 'WWII Memories of Thurrock' exhibition, compiled by Thurrock Museum volunteers, in the ground floor exhibition space of the Thameside Complex in New Road, Grays.
Visitors can explore images like the one below from Thurrock Museum's archives, local newspapers and other sources. Photos from family collections will also be showcased, displaying local people and places.

World War One memorial artwork goes on show in Grays

8 July 2019
Community-inspired artwork marking 100 years since the end of the First World War will be on display in Grays next week.
From Tuesday 9 July to Thursday 18 July, local residents and visitors can study a collection of arts, crafts, poetry and homemade poppies on the first floor gallery space of the Thameside Complex in Orsett Road, Grays during normal opening hours.

Museum competition winners commence borough-wide tour

Three winning artefacts that were named Thurrock’s favourites in a public vote will begin their tour around the borough this week.
Earlier this year, residents picked Iron Age minted coins, a clock and medal, and women's war uniform out of a shortlist of 10 Thurrock Museum items, which they believed best illustrated Thurrock's rich heritage.
Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage-funded Thurrock’s Attic Project, the three artefacts will be showcased alongside an informative pop-up banner at the following venues:

Peace exhibition concludes museum's commemoration of World War One

A free exhibition focusing on peace in Britain and Europe after World War One will be held at the Thameside Complex later this month.
From Monday 24 June to 11am on Friday 5 July, residents can discover how the First World War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919.
'The Peace – Making a New Europe' exhibition, researched and presented by Thurrock Museum volunteers, will be located in the ground floor gallery of the Thameside Complex in Orsett Road, Grays.

Interwar memories come to life at Thurrock Museum

Experience an era of significant change in a new exhibition at the Thameside Complex next month.
From Monday 8 April to 11am, Friday 26 April, locals can discover about the period between the two World Wars – known as the 'interwar' years – at a free exhibition presented by Thurrock Museum volunteers.
The years between November 1918 and September 1939 saw England adjusting to a social transformation as career opportunities developed for women, those aged over 21 were given the right to vote and Nancy Astor became the first woman MP.

Thurrock Museum launches public vote for collection tour

Thurrock Museum is taking a selection of artefacts on tour around the borough later this year – and it's up to residents to decide which objects make the cut!
From Monday 4 February to Friday 15 March, local people can vote for their favourite item out of a shortlist of 10 artefacts from the museum’s collections which illustrate the story of Thurrock's rich heritage. The 3 most popular artefacts will then be showcased in the upcoming Thurrock Museum Collections on Tour, which will circulate the borough later this year.

Wartime memories brought to life at Thurrock Museum

Share your wartime memories of life in the borough at a special event marking this year's 80th anniversary of the start of World War Two.
On Wednesday 23 January, residents are invited to a Memories Morning between 11am and 1pm at the Thameside Complex as part of Thurrock Museum’s new World War Two commemorative project. 
Those attending will be able to reminisce about their wartime memories connected to Thurrock on the day over a tea or coffee. All experiences shared will be recorded and archived for future use in exhibitions, events and publications. 

'Images of War' at the Thameside Complex

A new exhibition at Thurrock Museum will showcase the stunning photography, art and poetry, which recorded the events of the First World War, both on the frontline and at home.
The free ‘Images of War’ exhibition will run from Monday 14 January until Friday 1 February at the Thameside Complex. It will show how the Great War was seen at the time and in its immediate aftermath 100 years ago.

Exhibition looks back at WW1 school days

A special exhibition opening at Thurrock Museum next week will take a look back at how life was for the children who attended school during the First World War (WW1).
'Lessons During War' tells the story of schools and the different forms of education during the Great War, and includes pictures of Thurrock schools from the time.
It shows how children helped the war effort and gives an insight into their views on the war.

Museum gets lottery funding for Attic project

20 July 2018
Thurrock Museum has been awarded £10,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to help it catalogue the treasure trove of local historical artefacts currently stored in their archives.
Thurrock's Attic will see the museum organising its collection of historical artefacts so that new items can be put on public display. The project will start later this summer and is expected to take a year.
It signals an exciting future for the museum as it continues to celebrate the history of the borough from its home in the Thameside Complex, Orsett Road, Grays.
