1 November 2018

A report presented to Wednesday's meeting of full Council (31 October) examined the Housing service's performance and key achievements over the past year and looked forward to building work starting on dozens of new council homes in the borough.

It also highlighted ambitious regeneration plans to create over 1,000 new homes over the next 5 years.

The council’s new build programme is set to create 117 new council homes. There will be:

  • 29 new homes on the Tops Club site in Argent Street, Grays
  • 53 homes built in Claudian Way, Chadwell
  • 35 new flats aimed at meeting the needs of older residents developed in Calcutta Road, Tilbury

Cllr Barry Johnson, portfolio holder for housing, presenting the report, highlighted some of the successes. Over the past year, the Housing service has:

  • improved 843 homes – a third more than its target
  • exceeded its rent collection target, with 98.5% of rent paid
  • seen complaints about housing related issues drop by 27%

Cllr Johnson said: "We have exciting plans for the future of council housing in Thurrock with work soon to get under way creating affordable rental housing for dozens of families and plans to develop 1,000 new homes through Thurrock Regeneration Ltd.

"Our housing service is performing well and our plans for the future mean that more and more families will benefit from high quality and affordable homes created and maintained by Thurrock Council."
