The Summer Reading Challenge returns this July

29 June 2022

The Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge returns this summer, inviting children and young people to get reading and to use their creativity and curiosity to discover science.

By taking part in the challenge young people will be able to read exciting science-themed books, allowing them to collect rewards and develop their reading ability. Delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with the Science Museum Group, the challenge aims to create 'Gadgeteers' – young people who are excited and passionate about science in our world.

This year, the challenge will take place across all Thurrock libraries from Saturday 16 July to Saturday 3 September.

Cllr Barry Johnson, Cabinet Member for Education, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to not only keep our children and young people entertained over summer, it also helps nurture inquisitive young minds as they build their skills and confidence in reading. On top of this they get to learn more about the exciting and fundamentally important role science plays in their lives.

"By taking part and reading 6 books over the summer holidays, young people will receive a special medal and certificate. Those who go on to read 8 books will also receive a limited edition 'Gadgeteers' bag that's ideal for carrying library books. Children and young people across Thurrock can take part either at our libraries or virtually via the Summer Reading Challenge website (www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk).”

Cllr Qaisar Abbas, Cabinet Member for Communities and Equalities, added: "This year's challenge is a great opportunity for parents and guardians of our young people to get involved and support their children's education over summer, whilst themselves discovering the amazing opportunities our libraries have to offer for the community.

"I hope everyone taking part enjoys the challenge this summer and learns lots of wild and wonderful things about science and the world we live in."
