Preparing for emergencies at home

Know your area and community

Knowing your area is key to understanding and responding to a local emergency. Consider:

  • what could happen locally
  • what warnings might be given
  • what do they sound like
  • how do you know when it is safe
  • what do you do about pets in an emergency
  • what about the vulnerable and those less mobile
  • what about schools or workplaces
  • what are the hazards within your home

The Environment Agency provides a tool to help you discover what is in your area so you can be better informed.

Your community

You could make a difference in your community. Consider:

  • whether you have elderly, disabled or vulnerable neighbours that might need help
  • how neighbours can work together to help each other
  • what skills there are within your community
  • whether you have contact details for your neighbours
