There are many things you can do to prepare your home, such as:
- installing smoke detectors and fire extinguishers – you may be eligible for a home assessment visit from Essex Fire and Rescue
- getting a first aid kit - check and refill it regularly
- checking the batteries for portable radios and torches
- making sure your medication is up to date
- having basic equipment to protect your house if you live in a flooding area – for more information about floods, go to GOV.UK: check for flooding
- checking where you can switch off gas, electricity and water supplies is your home – if the main gas supply to your house is turned off, your gas appliances will need to be checked before they are switched on again
