Ready for winter

Household waste and recycling

In 2019/20, collection days will change before and after Christmas and New Year.

Christmas and New Year is a very busy period for waste and recycling collections so please make sure parked cars in your street don't stop our vehicles getting through.

Side waste

Please recycle as much as you can. Extra recycling will be taken if it’s tied-up in our free recycling bags – these clear blue bags can be collected from Thurrock libraries and Thurrock community hubs between 23 December and 16 January, or until stocks run out.

To check what you can recycle, go to A to Z of waste and recyclable items and what goes in your bins.

Other side waste should be tied-up in black bin bags. All side waste in black bin bags will be treated as non-recyclable.

All side waste should be put out next to your bins – it will be collected between 27 December and 16 January on your scheduled collection day.

Christmas waste in your 3 bins

It's important to put the right type of waste in each of your bins.

You can put your real Christmas tree in your brown bin, you just need to make sure it's in pieces and the lid is shut down.

When tidying up after opening your Christmas presents:

  • before you bin your wrapping paper, do the ‘scrunch test’ to see whether it can be recycled – when you scrunch up your wrapping paper, if it doesn't spring back you can safely put it in your blue bin to be recycled
  • try to remove all sticky tape from wrapping paper – sticky tape goes in your green/grey bin, wrapping paper without sticky tape goes in your blue bin
  • bows and ribbons cannot be recycled and must go in your green/grey bin
  • paper, cards and envelopes can be recycled in your blue bin, but any parts with glitter should be removed first and put in your green/grey bin – paper and card with glitter cannot be recycled
  • paper name tags without glitter can go in your blue bin
