Support with the cost of living

Energy bill support if you don't get it automatically

Most households received the government's £400 discount on their energy bills automatically. If you did not receive this discount and believe you are eligible, you can direct apply to the government no later than 31 May 2023 at GOV.UK: Apply for energy bill support if you do not get it automatically.

Cost of living support payments

We are providing a range of one-off payments to help residents with the cost of living. The money for these payments comes from central government funding.

Household Support Fund payment

You are eligible for payment from this fund if your household was receiving either:

  • 'Pension Age' local council tax support on 1 August 2022
  • Severe Mental Impairment exemption from council tax for a 'Pension Age' person on 1 August 2022

'Pension Age' means your State Pension age, even if you are still working. You can check your State Pension age at GOV.UK: Check your State Pension age.

The amount we can pay is £115. We share funding equally between all eligible households, so the amount you receive is limited only by how much we're given by the government.

You don't have to do anything to claim this payment – if you're eligible, we'll know from our council tax records and will send you a letter in September 2022 explaining how to get the payment.

Other money from this fund has already been used to provide extra free school meals and essential living fund support.

Local Energy Rebate payment

Most households in the UK occupying a property in council tax band A, B, C or D get a £150 energy bill rebate in 2022/23.

You will be eligible for a separate 'discretionary' local energy bill rebate payment if your household is not eligible for a Household Support Fund payment and was receiving either:

  • 'Working Age' local council tax support on 1 August 2022
  • Severe Mental Impairment exemption from council tax on 1 August 2022

It doesn't matter which council tax band your property is in.

The amount we can pay is £55. We share funding equally between all eligible households, so the amount you receive is limited only by how much we're given by the government.

You don't have to do anything to claim this payment – if you're eligible, we'll know from our council tax records and will send you a letter in September 2022 explaining how to get the payment.

How we'll make payments

Households can only be eligible for one of the payments above. If you're eligible for one of the payments, you don't have to contact us. The letter we send you in September 2022 will explain how to get your payment.

You'll be able to get your payment from any Post Office in the UK. It doesn't matter if you don't have a bank account.
