Underage sales

Underage sales of alcohol

It is illegal for any person to sell alcohol to a child under the age of 18. Both the seller and licence holder may be liable for the offence. The seller can also be issued with an £80 fixed penalty notice.

A licence review can lead to conditions being imposed on a trader's licence, or it may be suspended or revoked.

There is a maximum penalty of £10,000 if a shop is caught selling alcohol to children on 2 occasions in any 3-month period – this is known as 'persistent selling'.
