What is volunteering?

Volunteering is an opportunity to change things for the better, give something back to the community, develop skills and make friends. It is a great way to get involved in the community and to make a difference. Whether you are looking for something on a regular basis or can spare a few hours every now and then, you will find plenty of opportunities to suit your needs.

For more information please read our Guidance Information for Volunteers (see how to access PDF files):

Why should I volunteer?

Volunteering can give you the opportunity to have new experiences and meet new people. It can be good for your career and can give you the chance to get some practical experience. Volunteering can be very fulfilling and provide a sense of purpose, which is particularly good if you are retired or between jobs. It can help you to pursue a new direction and gives you the chance to give something back to the community.

Volunteering with Thurrock Council

Thurrock Council would like to encourage more people to play an active role in their communities. High levels of volunteering, or involvement with various community groups or forums, often increases people's feeling of well-being and influence. When different people come together, new ideas are formed and these can build stronger, more resilient communities.

We are keen to involve volunteers in a range of service areas. We often receive enquiries about volunteering from people who would like to boost their CV. We also know that residents have a wide range of skills and experience they want to put to use - and we want to help put this to good use to improve local services.

As a council, we want to deliver the best services possible - by involving volunteers, we can add value to existing services while benefiting from volunteer suggestions for improvements or new ways of working.
