Early years childcare standards

Early years foundation stage

You can choose from a range of registered childcare options for 'early years' children up to 5 years-old in Thurrock.

Options for registered early years childcare include:

Standards that school and childcare providers must meet for the learning, development and care of children from birth to the age of 5 years-old are set out in the GOV.UK: Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework.

Learning through play

Every opportunity to play allows children to learn and develop. From banging saucepans together on the kitchen floor, to pretending to be aeroplanes by imitating engine noises, children's play has a purpose. Play helps children to learn about themselves, each other and the world around them.

Early years childcare must make sure children get the most powerful experiences as possible from their opportunities to play. This involves teaching children how to play and teaching children through their play.

Guide for parents and carers

The Foundation Years website provides a simple guide that takes parents and carers through:

  • the expectations of each age band
  • how they can support their children's learning and development

To download the guide, go Foundation Years: Early Years Foundation Stage then select 'EYFS for parents' and the 'Parents' Guide to the EYFS Framework'.
