There is currently a significant measles outbreak in North London, and some children have needed hospital care. Because Thurrock, Southend and Essex are close to London and well connected by transport, it is very likely that we will see cases here too.
Measles spreads extremely easily, and children who are not vaccinated are much more likely to become seriously unwell. The MMR vaccine is the safest and most effective way to protect your child.
We are asking all parents and carers to check their child’s vaccination record. If your child has missed one or both MMR doses, please arrange for them to be vaccinated as soon as possible.

Dr Rubinder Bains, Director of Public Health at Thurrock Council, said:
“We know that hearing about measles cases nearby can be worrying for families, but there is a simple and very effective way to protect children. The MMR vaccine has been safely used for many years and offers excellent protection.
“Make sure you check your child’s vaccination status and catch up on any missed doses to help keep them safe, especially while measles is spreading more widely. Our local health teams are here to help, and taking this step now will give you confidence and peace of mind that your child is protected.”
