Tom and Nelly always knew they wanted children.
Having met later in life, they spoke early in their relationship about starting a family and agreed that if they were unable to have children naturally, they would consider adoption.
The couple were delighted to welcome a birth son, Thomas, now aged 11, but after experiencing miscarriages and being advised to pursue IVF, they began to reflect on another path.
Drawing on their experiences working in the police force, where they had seen some of the challenges children can face, they felt strongly that they could provide a loving and stable home for a child who needed one.
"Adoption just felt right for us," Tom explained. "We knew there were children who needed families and we felt we could offer that."
The first year of the adoption process was intensive and at times challenging.
"The training prepares you for every eventuality," Tom said. "It can feel daunting because you're encouraged to think about some very difficult situations, but it also helps you understand children's needs and experiences much better."
The process inspired Tom to develop a deeper understanding of child development and additional needs. As the father of a son with ADHD, he began researching and learning more independently, something he believes has helped him become a more empathetic and informed parent.
One of the highlights of their adoption journey was receiving approval from the adoption panel.
"Hearing our social worker talk about our strengths as a family was really special," Tom said. "The feedback from the panel gave us confidence that we were ready for the next step."
Finding the right match proved to be one of the most emotional stages of the process.
The couple reviewed hundreds of profiles, carefully considering how each child might fit into their family and the impact the decision would have on both their son and the child they hoped to adopt.
"Every child deserved a loving home," Tom explained. "We wanted to make sure it was the right match for everyone involved."
With support from their social worker, they remained focused and eventually received the profile of the little girl, Fiona, who would become their daughter.
"When her profile came through, everything just felt right," said Nelly. "I've always believed that everything happens for a reason."
Before Fiona moved in, the family took part in a three-week transition period.
"It was invaluable," Tom said. "We had time to get to know her, learn about her routines and understand what made her feel comfortable and secure."
Working closely with her foster carer helped them create a familiar environment from the start.
"We continued her bedtime routine exactly as she was used to, and that really helped her settle in quickly."
Now a family of four, Tom and Nelly say life feels complete.
Fiona, now three years old, adores her older brother and follows him everywhere. Watching their relationship grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of family life.
As they look forward to family holidays and making more memories together, the couple reflect on how much adoption has added to their lives.
"We've got everything we wanted," Tom said. "We feel extremely lucky."
For anyone considering adoption, Tom's advice is simple.
"I would fully recommend it. Adopting a child is incredibly rewarding, not just for you and your family, but for the child and their future as well."
"You need to be sure it's right for you and, if you're adopting as a couple, it's important to support each other throughout the process. But I can't speak highly enough about it. It's been such a positive experience for us all."
