Council and contractor partnership will help communities light up Thurrock this Christmas

Working proactively with contractor MGroup Ltd, Thurrock Council secured free electrical and structural testing of lamp columns in Corringham Town Centre as part of the company's social value commitments.

The arrangement has seen lampposts tested to make sure they are structurally and electrically safe enough to support Christmas decorations, which will support community organisations across Thurrock by removing a significant cost associated with the installation of Christmas decorations and festive lighting displays.

The initiative demonstrates the benefits of strong partnership working and collective leadership, bringing together the council, its contractors and local community organisations to support projects that benefit residents.

As a result of the agreement, community forums will be able to focus on delivering festive displays that help bring people together, create a welcoming atmosphere and boost the vibrancy of local shopping areas during the Christmas season.

The support also opens up opportunities for additional festive lighting displays to be installed in town centres and local shopping parades, helping to enhance the appearance of neighbourhoods and foster a stronger sense of community pride.

Cllr Alan Benson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said: “This is a fantastic example of how we can achieve more when we work together. By building strong partnerships and making the most of social value commitments, we are helping local communities deliver festive displays that residents can enjoy and be proud of.

“Civic pride is about making sure that everyone can play their part in making Thurrock an attractive, welcoming and vibrant place to live. I would like to thank MGroup for working collaboratively to support community-led initiatives that bring people together and help our town centres thrive.”

The initiative forms part of Thurrock Council’s ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships that deliver tangible benefits for communities across the borough.
