Free event to help parents and carers prepare children for school

7 May 2025

Parents and carers across Thurrock are invited to a special, free event to help them prepare their children for the exciting step of starting school or nursery this September.

'Day of fun with your little one!' will take place on Saturday 7 June 2025, from 9.30am to 2pm, at South Essex College, High Street, Grays, RM17 6TF.

The event will offer parents practical advice and activities focused on developing children's literacy, numeracy, and language skills through play at home.

Award-winning trainer Ben Kingston-Hughes will be delivering workshops on how play can be used to support children's development, confidence, and future learning.

Throughout the day, there will also be a range of free interactive workshops, giving parents and carers the opportunity to play games and take part in activities with their children while learning how these experiences support development, including:

  • Early Words Together – boosting communication and language skills
  • Making it Real – building literacy skills at home
  • Peep Early Maths Workshop – supporting children's confidence with numbers in everyday life

Local organisations will also be on hand to offer advice and information on topics including early years entitlements, oral health, holiday activities, and adult learning opportunities.

Cllr Vikki Hartstean, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

"Starting school is a big milestone, not just for children but for the whole family. This event is a brilliant opportunity for parents and carers to learn practical ways they can support their child’s early development through simple, playful activities at home. I would encourage all parents with young children to come along and find out how they can make this important transition a positive and exciting experience."

Places are free but spaces are limited. To book your place, visit Eventbrite.
