Let’s quit smoking together this Stoptober

Thurrock residents who smoke are being encouraged to make a quit attempt this October and take advantage of free support available to help them quit for good.

Stoptober is back, encouraging millions of people across England to come together and give quitting smoking a go.

Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and death, but quitting is one of the best things someone can do for their health. And there is a good reason the national campaign focuses on October, people who stop smoking for 28 days are five times more likely to quit for good.

Thurrock residents do not have to make their quit attempt alone. Thurrock Council’s Stop Smoking Service provides free professional support, including one-to-one support for up to 12 weeks, personalised quit plans, and advice to help residents manage cravings and triggers.

Residents may also be able to access nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), vape kits or prescribed medication, subject to availability.

Those who successfully quit smoking for 12 weeks with Thurrock Council’s Health Trainers can also receive a free two-month Impulse Leisure membership worth £150.

Cllr Robert Willoughby, Cabinet Member for Adult Health & Housing Services, said: “Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, but nobody should feel they have to do it alone.

“Stoptober is a great opportunity to give quitting a go, and here in Thurrock there is free, practical support available to help residents every step of the way.

“If you’ve tried to quit before, please don’t be discouraged. Every attempt counts and can bring you closer to quitting for good.

“Whether you’re quitting for your health, your family or your future, I would encourage you to make this October the month you take that next step.”

This year’s national Stoptober campaign also reminds people that every quit attempt counts.

People can make several attempts before successfully quitting for good, with each attempt providing valuable experience about triggers and what works best for them.

The campaign also challenges the misconception that smoking helps people manage stress. Evidence highlighted by Stoptober shows quitting can improve mental wellbeing, lift mood and reduce anxiety over time.
