When I became Leader of Thurrock Council, I made a commitment to restore civic pride across our borough. That means creating cleaner, safer and more welcoming places where residents feel proud of where they live and confident about the future of Thurrock.
One of the issues residents regularly raise with me is anti-social behaviour. Nobody should feel intimidated, unsafe or uncomfortable when visiting our town centres, parks or other public spaces. Tackling these issues is essential if we are to create communities where people feel secure and can enjoy everything our borough has to offer.
That is why we have introduced a renewed and enhanced Public Space Protection Order across Grays. The order gives our enforcement officers important powers to tackle behaviours such as street drinking, harassment, abusive language and other actions that have a negative impact on residents, businesses and visitors. It also allows officers to move offenders on and take swift action when necessary.
Measures like this are not just about enforcement. They are about ensuring our public spaces are places people want to visit, shop, work and spend time in. They are about supporting local businesses, protecting vulnerable residents and making sure we have a borough we are all proud to call home.
We are also taking action against other forms of criminal activity that affect our communities. This week, we launched a survey asking residents and businesses to share their views on the illegal sale of tobacco and vape products. The information gathered will help our Trading Standards team target future enforcement activity where it is needed most.
Illegal tobacco and vapes are far from victimless. They can expose people to unsafe and unregulated products, make it easier for children and young people to access nicotine, undermine legitimate local businesses and contribute to wider criminal activity. By working with residents, we can build a clearer picture of the challenges facing our communities and take effective action.
Creating cleaner neighbourhoods, tackling anti-social behaviour and supporting responsible businesses are all part of a bigger ambition for Thurrock.
While no single initiative can achieve that on its own, each step helps make our borough a safer, stronger and more welcoming place for everyone.
