New Blackshot redevelopment proposals could mean no new buildings on any part of King George Playing fields

23 May 2025

Thurrock Council is consulting on new proposals to redevelop the Blackshots Estate which could mean that no part of King George Playing Field is used for new homes.

Under previous proposals the three tower blocks - Keir Hardie House, Bevan House and Morrison House - were to be demolished and replaced with 258 new, modern and energy efficient homes in a series of medium-rise flat blocks and houses. In order to do this part of King George Playing Fields would be redeveloped as part of the new housing estate.

New proposals will mean that new homes could potentially be delivered by building on Chapel Farm, leaving King George Playing Field untouched.

Cllr Lee Watson, Cabinet Member for Good Growth, said: “While we want to deliver high quality modern homes for Blackshots we also want to make sure that views of local residents are taken into account.

“We know that the previous proposals, which would have meant the loss of some of King George Playing Field, were not well liked locally. That is why I am delighted that we are able to put forward these new proposals which leave the playing fields untouched."

An engagement event with current Blackshots residents to get their initial views on the new proposals took place yesterday evening, Thursday 22 May. Following that a wider consultation will be launched.
