New Mayor, Leader and Cabinet appointed at Thurrock Council

Thurrock Council has a new Leader, Cabinet and Mayor, following Annual Council on Wednesday 27 May.

Cllr Bill Cook has been named as Mayor with Cllr James Poyntz taking on the role of Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Cook said: “It is an incredible honour to be the Mayor of Thurrock, it is a place I am extremely proud of and I will wear that pride on my sleeve as I spend the next 12 months celebrating the borough, all the wonderful people that live here and their many fantastic achievements.

“I will be nominating Diabetes UK as my official charity. They do an incredible amount of work in the borough, helping local people and supporting local causes.”

Cllr Richard Bingley has been named as Leader of Thurrock Council. He said: “We are pleased to have created a Cabinet that brings a variety of skills together which will help us deliver an exciting and vibrant future for Thurrock.

“There is much work ahead, but I am confident that we have the knowledge, and know-how, to truly deliver for the people of Thurrock, and create a borough that will thrive as somewhere people are truly proud to be a part of.”

The new Cabinet, appointed at Annual Council, is:

  • Leader Cllr Richard Bingley: In addition - Cabinet Member for Public Protection, Community Safety and Veterans
  • Deputy Leader Cllr Alan Benson: Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways
  • Cllr Alex Anderson: Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, Digital and Transformation
  • Cllr Sara Poyntz: Cabinet Member for Finance
  • Cllr George Monk: Cabinet Member for Deregulation, Efficiency and Civic Pride
  • Cllr Tom Kelly: Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Environment
  • Cllr Milena Bingley: Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Children’s Services
  • Cllr Rob Willoughby: Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Housing Services

The Annual Council meeting also appointed members to council committees including the Planning Committee, Licensing Committee, Audit Committee, Standards Committee, General Services Committee and Overview and Scrutiny Committees.
