NHS resident doctors’ industrial action (17–22 December): Guidance for residents

16 December 2025

Thurrock Council is sharing the following information on behalf of Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS).

The British Medical Association has confirmed that resident doctors will be taking industrial action from 7am on Wednesday 17 December until 7am on Sunday 22 December. This may affect some NHS services across mid and south Essex, including Thurrock.

Impact on NHS services

During this period, NHS services are expected to be under increased pressure. The NHS has confirmed that planning is in place across mid and south Essex to maintain safe services.

According to the NHS:

  • Urgent and emergency care will remain available
  • Consultants, senior doctors and other NHS staff will continue working
  • Care will be prioritised for patients with the most urgent needs

Anyone who is seriously unwell, injured, or whose life is at risk should continue to seek care as normal, including attending emergency departments or calling 999 where appropriate.

Appointments and routine care

There may be disruption to some routine and non-urgent appointments during the strike period.

Residents are advised to:

  • Attend appointments as planned unless contacted directly by the NHS
  • Wait to be contacted if an appointment needs to be rearranged

GP services

GP practices will remain open during the industrial action. Some GP trainees may also be taking part, which could increase demand for appointments. Practices will prioritise care for those who need it most.
