On Friday 10 July Thurrock Council and the borough’s Bosnian community came together at an emotional ceremony which marked the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide to honour the memory of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys who were murdered in July 1995.
After the genocide, surviving Bosnian refugees were rescued and brought to the UK, with a small number transported to Orsett Hospital. Having received treatment and support, they now live in Thurrock, contributing to the Borough and helping others learn of their experiences.
The memorial, which took place in Grays Town Park this morning, marked the 31st anniversary of the genocide, which was the largest massacre in Europe since the end of the Second World War. The park is home to a lasting tribute to the victims and those who continue to live with the grief and loss of the Srebrenica genocide.
Speaking at the memorial service Cllr William Cook, Mayor of Thurrock, said: "The theme of this year’s Remember Srebrenica Week is 'We Are Here'.
"'We Are Here' is the voice of survivors of genocide who endured unimaginable loss, yet stand today with dignity, courage and strength.
"It is also a call to action for all of us to stand up against hate and prejudice. We are here next to the memorial which represents our commitment never to forget.”
