Some of the most inspirational children and young people from across Thurrock came together to celebrate a host of remarkable achievements at the 2026 SEND and Alternative Provision Awards.
Thurrock Council hosted the special awards ceremony at Blackshots Civic Hall in Grays on Friday 19 June, recognising the incredible accomplishments of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and those in Alternative Provision.
The awards shone a spotlight on young people aged 0–25 who have demonstrated resilience, determination and perseverance in their daily lives, both in and beyond education.
Guests enjoyed a performance by the Thurrock Music Service String Quintet before the awards were presented.
Cllr Bill Cook, Mayor of Thurrock, was at the event to present the nominees and winners with their awards.
A total of seven awards were presented:
- Student of the Year Award – recognising exceptional commitment to a learning journey, with consistent effort and dedication
- Celebrating Success Beyond School – recognising achievements outside the classroom, including community, sport and the arts
- Overcoming Adversity to Access Education – celebrating those who have faced challenges and continued their education with resilience
- Star Supporter: Peers and Siblings Award – recognising siblings, friends and peers who provide vital encouragement and support
- Preparing for Adulthood Achievement Award – highlighting young people preparing for adulthood through education, employment, independence or community involvement
- Little Achievers Award (EYFS – Overcoming Challenges to Access Education) – celebrating young children who have shown resilience in accessing and thriving in education
- Alternative Provision Rising Star Award – recognising outstanding progress and development in alternative provision, with primary and secondary categories
Lola-Mai, winner of the 'Alternative Provision Rising Star Award - Secondary', said: "I enjoyed the event a lot! I didn't expect to win, so I feel really proud of myself and it was nice to see so many people clapping for me when my name was called!"
Cllr Milena Bingley, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Children’s Services, said: “Our SEND and Alternative Provision Awards celebrate the achievements of so many inspiring children and young people from across Thurrock.
“These awards recognise not only academic progress, but the resilience, determination and personal growth shown by each nominee and winner. Their stories are a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with the right support and encouragement."
